Research Opening in Electrical Engineering at Nanyang Technological University

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher position in computer science to join Nanyang Technological University. This position is available for 5 years in the first instance. This position is open until filled.

We are seeking a strong and motivated candidate for the position of Research Fellow in the area of Cyber-Physical Systems, with research focus on the design of resilient hardware platforms and communication networks. This position is part of a corporate lab initiative involving NTU and Delta Electronics, a leading electronics manufacturing company. The expected start date for the position is November 2017, and the expected duration of the position is 1.5 years. Remuneration will be attractive and commensurate based on the qualifications and suitability for the project.

The candidate is expected to have a PhD degree in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related fields.

1.Design of hardware and middleware (Operating Systems and Hypervisors) for cyber-physical systems.

Experience in both design as well as implementation of technologies for cyber-physical systems is highly desirable. The candidate will be responsible for the management of the overall project, and will lead a team of 3 Research Assistants and 1 PhD student. The position is expected to provide an excellent opportunity to perform both fundamental as well as translational research in close collaboration with industry.

Project Overview: Systems that control physical environments like living spaces, known as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), have transformed significantly. Due to device proliferation and large-scale connectivity, a variety of functionalities are now feasible in CPS. However, connectivity also means that these systems operate in unreliable open environments, and hence resiliency to faults (reliability), malfunctions (safety) and attacks (security) become important. This resiliency is fundamentally dependent on the resiliency of the cyber-infrastructure of CPS (communication network and computation nodes), which plays a central role of data delivery and execution of control. The objective of this project is to design a resilient cyber-infrastructure for such emerging CPS.

As part of the project, we will design a resilient cyber-infrastructure including hardware platforms, middleware solutions and communication protocols. Since the project is part of a corporate lab, it is also expected that a demonstrator would be implemented to showcase the design. We plan to implement these resiliency solutions for an entrance security application under the smart living research domain. The developed solutions are expected to be used for both local decision making (e.g., building entrance security) as well as global decision making (e.g., campus-wide entrance security and its management in emergencies).
