Research Fellow at Australian National University

A new postdoc position in artificial intelligence is available at Australian National University. The deadline to apply is January 14, 2019.

The ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) is dedicated to contributing to The Australian National University's reputation for excellence in research and research-led education, bringing together expertise across a range of areas to reimagine the role of engineering and computing for future generations. CECS is a diverse and vibrant community dedicated to discovery and to making knowledge matter. Our academics and students are engaged in ground-breaking, cutting-edge research, in exciting areas such as renewable energy, robotics, telecommunications, biomaterials, human-machine interaction, and artificial intelligence.

The Solar Thermal Group (STG), part of the Research School of Engineering, has a40 yearhistory of experimentally-driven work in the field of solar thermal energy, with around 30 research staff and students. The group maintains the 500 m2 Big Dish as a full-scale experimental CSPfacility, andhas recently commissioned a new solar thermochemistry laboratory including a 45kWehigh-flux solar simulator. STG conducts research and education in the broad area of solar thermal energy conversion and related basic and applied disciplines. The main applied research themes are concentrating solar technologies for power generation and production of fuels and commodity materials, solar heating and cooling, and system integration. The basic research spans across optics, photonics, radiative transfer, thermal sciences, chemistry, and materials science.

This research-intensive position is in the concentrating solar thermal (CST) field, and contributes to research within a number of ANU-led projects. These projects are primarily funded under the Australian Solar Thermal Research Institute (ASTRI), which has the mission to support, develop and demonstrate the components and integrated systems to rapidly enable economically feasible CST power generation. ASTRI has a strong focus on technology advancement, and pilot-scale demonstration of high-temperature CST technologies. The position is defined by the objectives of these ASTRI projects, a key component of which is the design and development of high-temperature sodium receiver technologies and heliostat technologies. This requires experience in ray optics, numerical modelling, heat transfer, programming ability in common languages (e.g. Python, C, C++), and aptitude for experimental data analysis & interpretation. A second part of the role is to contribute to research within a separate ARENA-funded project, which concerns the development of an automated visual inspection system for both CSP and PV power plants, in particular development of analytical tools and software for measurement of soiling levels.
