Postdoctoral Position in Condensed Matter Physics at University of Amsterdam

The Institute of Physics (IoP) of the Faculty of Science combines the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute (WZI), the Institute of Theoretical Physics (ITFA) and the Institute for High Energy Physics (IHEF) and is one of the large research institutes of the faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam. A postdoctoral position is available and will be shared between the Soft and Hard Condensed Matter Groups of the WZI at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

The aim of this postdoctoral project is to make and investigate semiconductor nanomaterials and their assemblies. Specifically, youwill study techniques of preparation of strained nanoparticles by ball milling and also use laser annealing to sinter nano- and macro-scaled assemblies of nanoparticles. Besides the preparation of the materials and their assemblies, we will also study their opto-electronic properties on the micro- and macro-scales. These materials are both of fundamental scientific interest as well as important for applications in future smart materials and materials for energy.

New micron and nano particles have the potential to act as building blocks in hierarchical structures of tomorrow's materials: the ability to design these particles using physical methods, such as ball milling and laser annealing offer clean and up-scalable ways that can be easily implemented in industrial processes.

Novel solvent-free mechano-chemical nanoparticle synthesis offers a very promising route, but is challenging. In addition, the assembly of these particles into functional structures provides an equally big challenge: it requires fundamental understanding of colloidal assembly, and the statistical mechanics of equilibrium and non-equilibrium structure formation.

In this project we will use self-prepared (un-)strained and/or amorphized nanoparticles and investigate their optical properties using dedicated microscopy coupled with AFM and various light detectors (CCD, PMT and APDs) for spectral and time resolution. Nanomaterials with desired properties will be assembled and semi-sintered using laser annealing. Using the available (photo-) conductive, force microscopy and nanomanipulation modes of the AFM setup, we will study the topography, mechanical and electronic properties of the assemblies with the goal to use these materials in energy applications.

In collaboration with the theory and simulation groups in Amsterdam, we will then elucidate the underlying physical principles to understand the relationship between structure and optoelectronic properties. The combination of direct observation and modelling will yield fundamental insight into the novel materials that will be manufactured. Furthermore, this work should elucidate novel "design rules" to create complex assemblies at the nanoscale. The work will be embedded in the lively environment of the Amsterdam Hard Condensed Matter and Soft Matter groups under joint supervision of Dr K. Newell and Prof. P. Schall.

You will work in an inspiring cross-disciplinary environment with diverse expertise in colloidal synthesis and assembly, condensed matter physics and spectroscopy, as well as take part in our national and international collaborations.

The appointment will be on a temporary basis. The initial appointment will be for a period of 2 years and can, after satisfactory evaluation, be extended for a total duration of 3 years and should lead to number of publications. Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range between 2,709 to 4,274 (scale 10 according to the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities).TheCollective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universitiesis applicable.Favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
