Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Science at Lund University

Lund University, Sweden is inviting excellent candidates to apply for a postdoc position in environmental sciences. The initial contract for this position is three years. Applications are invited up to February 14, 2019.

The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into nine departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1500 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

The Centre for Environmental and Climate Research, CEC ( conducts research, education and communication on environmental science and climate research at Lund University.

Research area

The post doc will work in an ongoing research project on mapping benefits from urban nature-based solutions1. Urban areas are facing challenges caused by urbanisation which may be excacerbated by interactions with ongoing climate change. Traditionally urban areas have used grey infrastructure to meet challenges such as management of storm water and heat waves. However, recently nature-based solutions (NBS) or green infrastructure have been proposed as an alternative to handle urban challenges. NBS may provide multiple benefits in terms of ecosystem services such as climate regulation, storm water retention, biodiversity and cultural values. The aim of the project is to study how NBS are distributed within the urban setting and how this spatial distribution affects their possibility to handle urban challenges and provide multiple ecosystem services.


We welcome applicants for a two year post doc position on nature-based solutions in cities focusing on mapping and assessing the services NBS provide. This includes examination of the spatial distribution of NBS in selected Swedish cities and how their distribution influence ecosystem services and their contribution to meet urban challenges. The project also aims to evaluate relations of NBS to to biophysical and socio-economic factors. Methods for mapping and assessing NBS includes, mapping using remote sensing, or spatially explicit data in GIS with models translating this into ecosystem service predictions.

The position is based at CEC at Lund University and part of a project on "Nature-based Solutions for Urban Challenges" coordinated by CEC and involving IIIEE and LTH, that is a part of an inter disciplinary research environment with expertise and experience in ecology, water resources, spatial planning and policy analyses. The post doc will be a part of an interdisciplinary research environment with expert knowledge in ecological processes, modelling, water resource engineering, urban planning and policy. The postdoc may also participate in teaching on a limited basis.

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant have a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. The most important criterion for evaluating the applicants will be scientific skill. Emphasis will also be on the extent to which the applicant can contribute to the general work on the Formas research Project.
