Postdoctoral Fellow at The University of New South Wales

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoc position in evolutionary biology at The University of New South Wales. Applications should be sent before January 13, 2019.

At UNSW, we pride ourselves on being a workplace where the best people come to do their best work.

The School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS) has an international reputation in biotechnology, evolutionary and molecular biology, and microbiology. BABS teaches approximately 2,000 full-time equivalent students, and has 34 academics, 28 postdoctoral research associates or fellows. This role will also work closely with the adjacent EMBL Australia Node in Single Molecule Science which houses a ~100 m2 custom-built microscopy laboratory with instruments such a lattice light-sheet microscope, single-objective light-sheet microscopes and dedicated single molecule microscopes.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work in the area of microbiology and biophysics as a contract researcher to examine the experimental evolution of the evolution of the bacterial flagellar motor (BFM). A remarkable product of evolution, the BFM rotates at up to 100,000 rpm to drive swimming and navigate bacteria towards food. The Fellow will engineer ancient genes into present day bacterial genomes to 're-run' evolution to make a microbial 'Jurassic Park'. We combine biotechnology and synthetic biology to direct motor evolution and then apply novel engineered motors to control fluid flows in microreactors.

Our supervisory team has teaching and research experience in biophysics, microbiology, synthetic biology and evolutionary biology and will provide a tailored training environment for the candidate to learn complementary skills in biophysics and microbiology.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will report to Dr Matthew Baker and has no direct reports

You should systematically address the selection criteria listed within the position descriptionin your application. Please apply online – applications will not be accepted if sent to the contact listed.
