The Biointerface Group at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge is looking for a part-time Research Associate to lead the effort on designing, developing and building a state-of-the-art functional single cell deposition system. Our group is a multi-disciplinary group which has strong interest and expertise in developing organ-on-a-chip platforms and 3D bioprinting technology (see: We expect this project to establish possibility and suitability of a high-resolution deposition system for cells and also to study their viability and interactions with the system by tuning and optimisation of the system parameters.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in mechanical, mechatronics or biomedical engineering, preferably with a number of years of instrument development experience. They can have experience in one or more of the following areas: precision motion control (particularly piezo driven systems), deposition of functional materials, instrumentation and control, printing technologies and automated cell processing technique. Knowledge in biomaterials and cell cultures are a plus but not essential.

Candidates are expected to be good communicators, independent thinkers, and have the ability to bring out-of-the-box solutions to problems. They should be able to operate in a highly interdisciplinary environment involving engineers, cell biologists, biochemists, and medics.
