Postdoc Position at Imperial College London

Imperial College London, UK is inviting excellent candidates to apply for a postdoctoral researcher position in pharmacology. The funds for this fellowship are available for three years. Potential candidates should apply before February 13, 2019.

We wish to recruit highly motivated individuals to two post-doctoral Research Associate posts. You will join a cardiovascular pharmacology group of basic scientists and clinicians. Our group has research projects that span across all aspects of vascular biology including (i) within cardiovascular diseases, (ii) cardiovascular complications as a co-morbidity with other diseases and (iii) as a side effect to drugs.

Specifically, this particular research addresses the mechanism(s) by which COX-2 protects the cardiovascular system. COX-2 is an enzyme located within discreet regions including the kidney, brain, gut, lungs, thymus and some areas of vascular endothelium. In one or more of these regions COX-2 activity protects the cardiovascular system from hypertension, atherosclerosis and thrombosis. We know this because common pain medications such as ibuprofen, which work by blocking COX-2, increase blood pressure, reduce renal function and elevate an individual's personal risk of getting a heart attack or stroke by as much as 30%. Because these drugs are some of the most widely used in the world, this adds up to a major health care problem which urgently needs to be addressed. The program of work will use novel genetically modified mouse models and samples from clinical trials to establish the cellular location of the cardioprotective COX-2, the mechanisms by which COX-2 works in the cardiovascular system and the interplay between whole body COX-2 and other vascular pathways with a focus on endothelial nitric oxide and the methylarginines.

The research posts are funded by the British Heart Foundation and are available for three years in the first instance with the potential to extend for a further two years.

The key duty of the post holder(s) is to develop perform research.

You will have a PhD within in a relevant subject and proven hands on expertise in cardiovascular models relevant to the project. For both posts in vivo research experience is desired and for one of the posts it is an essential requirement. You should have a proven research track record through peer review publications and conference presentations. You will also have excellent communication, organisational and time management skills and a creative approach to problem solving, together with the ability to work constructively and effectively within the team.

Imperial College is ranked within the top ten universities of the world, according to the 2018 Times Higher Education Supplement league tables.
