PhD Student Antimicrobials in Pork Production Project

University of Helsinki, Finland is offering PhD position in veterinary medicine. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for two years in Finland. Applicants should apply before January 31, 2019.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine ( is the only institution of higher education in Finland to produce veterinarians. It has about 750 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs about 150 academic staff, which is about a half of the total staff number. The degree programmes have been accredited in accordance with the ESEVT system for the evaluation of veterinary education in Europe. The Faculty has four departments and a Veterinary Teaching Hospital and hosts the Research Centre for Animal Welfare. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is Finland's only veterinary hospital for all animal species and a top-level unit in veterinary care. It includes companion animal and equine hospitals in Helsinki, Viikki Campus, and the production animal hospital in the city of Mntsl.

The Department of Production Animal Medicine (…), which is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, focuses clinical research on domestic animals. The Department aims to study animal diseases and specifically to promote animal health and welfare. The Department operates in two locations: the Saari estate in Mntsl (about 70 kilometres northeast of Helsinki) and the Viikki Campus in Eastern Helsinki.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the position of a

for a fixed period, starting as soon as possible. The research project has existing funding for two years. Further funding will be applied during the project.

The position is at the Department of Production Animal Medicine in a research project "Minimal need to use antimicrobials in pork production". The study aims to find means to lower the need to use antimicrobials in pork production and to start the development of a species-specific probiotic or a combination of probiotics. The work will include also herd visits to Finnish piggeries. The researcher will work in close connection with the pig research group (Facebook: Pig Research Group, University of Helsinki / Sikaryhm, Helsingin yliopisto).

The duties of a doctoral student are to work on her/his own doctoral thesis in the research project and to complete her/his postgraduate studies. The duties can include also teaching and other tasks. Teaching tasks can account for up to 5 % of the annual working time. The duties also include presentation of research results in international conferences and preparation of scientific publications.

- MSc degree (or equivalent) in relevant discipline (etc. veterinary science, animal science, biology, microbiology)

- Motivation to work as a researcher in a pig project doing also herd visits in different parts of Finland - Good communication and co-operation skills - Good knowledge of spoken and written English - Driving license - The salary is based on the University of Helsinki salary system. For a doctoral student, the monthly starting gross salary is usually about 2200 euros/month.
