PhD Scholarship Position in Synthetic Population for Transport Modeling

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD scholarship in information systems at Chalmers University of Technology. The funds for this fellowship are available for five years. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before February 11, 2019.

The Department of Space, Earth and Environment contains five divisions, with research and education spanning from global challenges related to sustainability and energy supply to astronomy and space sciences. The department is host to two major infrastructures, Onsala Space Observatory and Chalmers Power Central, and consists of about 250 employees.

Information about the division

The division of Physical Resource Theory carries out research and education on potential solutions to our major environmental challenges, e.g. global warming and sustainable use of land and other resources. At our division we focus on research in the field of technical and socio-economic systems addressing the challenges involved in the transition into a sustainable and low carbon society for a growing poulation, where a range of different quantitative and qualitative methods can be applied on our reseach topics. The ambition is to build challenge-driven scientific excellence by crossing traditional boundaries and increase the level of multi-disciplinarity in research. The division has around 40 staff members, faculty and PhD-students with diverse expertise, including engineers, natural and social scientists. We also offer courses in areas related to our research.

Major responsibilities

There is an urgent need to provide a new generation of transport modeling framework that simulates, supports, and plans for the major paradigm shifts of new mobility in large geographical regions. Synthetic Sweden is unique in being the first attempt to combine agent-based modeling (ABM) with Big Data analytics and large-scale optimization techniques to study the transformative changes in mobility. This project will apply state-of-the-art analytical tools deeply rooted in recent advances in computer science and information and communication technology (IC T) - including synthetic information systems, ABMs, Big Data analytics and large-scale optimization. The framework will be used to explore how transformative technologies, new mobility services, and consumer behaviours involving EVs and AVs will co-evolve to meet future mobility needs; what are the infrastructure requirements; and how changes in behaviour, land use (urban vs. rural) and new policies can both increase societal benefits and reduce energy use and GHG emissions. Through scenarios and case-studies we aim to develop realistic decisions supporting tools that will improve the design and planning of sustainable mobility. The project is a collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology and the Biocomplexity Institute at University of Virginia. This research will be supported by the Swedish Research Council FORMAS. The PhD position is placed at the division of Physical Resource Theory, one of four divisions within the Department of Space, Earth, and Environment.

As a PhD student your main responsibility is to pursue your own doctoral studies, which includes work in the research project but also to undertake doctoral courses. You are expected to work independently, have the ability to plan and organize your work, to work in close collaboration with other group members and partners, and to be able to communicate scientific results, both orally and in written form, in English. The doctoral program is supposed to lead to the doctoral degree, equivalent to four years of full-time studies, which includes research, studies in courses, and participation in seminars and conferences. Included teaching obligation.

Full-time temporary employment.The position is limited to a maximum of five years. The position will remain open until filled. The expected starting date is April-June 2019.


We require a Master’s degree in mathematics/statistics/data analytics/complex systems/physics relevant to the research area. Courses and/or a Master thesis projects in data analytics, spatial science or other areas of direct relevance for the reseach project are meritorious.

We look for a student with a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter. Excellent analytical and communication skills are required. We expect the applicant to have the ambition to take on responsibility and ability to work independently towards set goals.
