General information about third-cycle studies: The PhD education in Medical Science corresponds to studies of 240 credits in total. The studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. The studies comprisecarrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. Background:The poor resolution, low contrast, depth dependence, and high noise in nuclear medicine images arise from the camera design as well as the physical properties of the emitted photons, such as attenuation and scatter. To improve image quality, various approximate calculation formulas have been developed and implemented in clinical practice. However, these methods could generate image artefacts due to the inability to correctly recover patient-specific image-degrading effects. To overcome these limitations Monte Carlo (MC) based simulation of the photons path to detector has been proposed as the ultimate method in SPECT reconstructions. We further speculate that an appropriated deep learning algorithm might reduce the noise in SPECT images.

Aims:The overall aim of the proposed PhD project is to improve image quality of single photon emission tomography (SPECT) images. Specifically, this will aim to improve the use of Monte Carlo techniques in reconstructions of SPECT images, and to apply deep-learning algorithms for noise reduction in SPECT images. The PhD project is divided into specific studies that will involve different techniques to improve SPECT image quality and dosimetry. 1. Evaluation of the influence of different back-projection methods in SPECT image quality. 2. Characterization and optimization of Monte Carlo based reconstruction of SPECT images 3. Evaluation of deep learning interpolated projections impact on image quality. 4. Quantification of the absorbed dose distribution in the kidneys and creating a dose-response model The PhD project is expected to generate improved image quality that will secure an improved dose estimate for patients treated with radiopharmaceuticals. It is also expected that the SPECT scanning times can be reduced. Lastly, we expect to obtain an improved understanding of the impact of non-uniform kidney dose distributions on the kidneys radiotolerability.

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad for third-cycle studiesif he or she: has successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

– specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields – experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology – scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1998:80.Only those who are admitted to third-cycle studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. They may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration according to the regulations.

The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. The total employment period may not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle studies for four years.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.
