PhD Scholarship Position in Insights Into Carbon Fibres in Structural Composite Batteries

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in nanotechnology at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. This position is available for 4 years. Applications are welcome before March 10, 2019.

Information about the division

The division of Material and Manufacture covers the entire value chain from the design, processing to characterization of materials. The division uses a number of technologies - powder metallurgy, electroplating, additive manufacturing, and material cutting - as well as a range of advanced characterization techniques. The work is multidisciplinary by nature and addresses topics that directly affect sustainability.

The project

The project focuses on structural composite batteries, a multifunctional battery integrating energy storage capabilities to structural components. It is a key enabling technology in realizing substantial weight savings on the system level. Imaging the doors and hoods of an electric car also store energy! Carbon fibres play dual roles in these batteries, reinforcements (as in carbon fibre composites) and negative electrodes (as in batteries). However, almost all carbon fibres were developed from the mechanical point of view; a fundamental understanding on the behaviour of carbon fibres under the dynamic electrochemical and mechanical processes in structural composite batteries, and on the relationship between their performance and microstructure are still largely lacking.

Within this project, we aim to gain a fundamental understanding on the microstructural evolution of carbon fibres under the coupled electrochemical and mechanical loading (charging/discharging cycles and simultaneous load-bearing) in structural composite batteries. The main activities include: 1) to build a novel in-situ platform in an electron microscope, which will enable us to study micro-structural-composite-batteries under electrochemical and mechanical loading live; 2) to gain a fundamental understanding on the interaction between lithium ions and carbon fibres, using transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography; 3) to gain a fundamental understanding on the interplay between electrochemical and mechanical loading. You will have the opportunity to work in a truly interdisciplinary team of scientists.

The project is financed by the Swedish Energy Agency.

Major responsibilities

The doctoral program is equivalent to four years of full-time studies, which include research, studies in courses (at least 60 course credits), and participation in seminars and conferences. The PhD student will develop the method for in-situ study of structual composite batteries in electron microscope to understand carbon fibres in dynamic electrochemical and mechanical processes. You must learn to use various advanced microscopy and microanalysis techniques, build the in-situ platform, and perform experiments in the platform. The student is also expected to develop his/her own scientific concepts and communicate the results of the research verbally and in writing (in English).

Apart from the scientific objective, the PhD student is expected to take part in teaching activities of maximum 20 % each year.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to 4 years. An extension of up to one year, for teaching, may be possible.


We seek a highly motivated and self-propelled person, who has a Master’s level degree in Materials Science, Engineering Physics or other relevant field.

You are able to work both independently and as part of a big team. Previous experience with batteries, and/or electron microscopy is an advantage.

You are fluent in oral and written English. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
