PhD Scholarship in Mathematics at Lund University

Lund University is delighted to offer a PhD position in mathematics. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for 5 years in Sweden. This position is closed on February 28, 2019.

LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.

Work duties

The doctoral students positions are mainly devoted to postgraduate studies, but include 20% department service, usually teaching. The research area for the current call is smooth ergodic theory with applications to number theory.

Research projects:The theory of dynamical systems is on one hand a field of its own and on the other hand a universal interdisciplinary method in mathematics and sciences. It connects different areas by using methods and results of all fields of mathematics and gives rise to broad applications all over in mathematics and sciences. The main aim is to investigate as general as possible class of systems with only very weak conditions and derive far reaching conclusions.

The team in Lund belongs to the leading researchers in the area of differentiable dynamics and ergodic theory. We have intensive contacts to most of the important centers in this field.

Dynamical system theory helps substantially to understand the applicability or limitations of mathematical models. The project consists of two parts. In the first part we will investigate dynamical assump-tions that imply certain statistical properties. In the second we want to use dynamical methods to study classical and new number theoretic problems. In the number theoretic part we will study systems that model simultaneous Diophantine approximation. In number theory many problems can be resembled as statistical problems of some underlying dynamical systems. We intend to use methods from dynamical systems, measure theory, harmonic analysis, algebra, geometry, probability, combinatorics and number theory.

Admission requirements

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.

Assessment criteria

Selection for third-cycle studies is based on the student’s potential to profit from such studies. The assessment of potential is made primarily on the basis of academic results from the first and second cycle.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his or her experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the third cycle programme

Limit of tenure, four years according to HF 5 kap 7.

Only those admitted to third cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. Third cycle studies at LTH consist of full-time studies for 4 years. A doctoral studentship is a fixed-term employment of a maximum of 5 years (including 20% departmental duties). Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7.

Instruction on how to apply

Applications shall be written in English and include a cover letter stating the reasons why you are interested in the position and in what way the research project corresponds to your interests and educational background. The application must also contain a CV, degree certificate or equivalent, and other documents you wish to be considered (grade transcripts, contact information for your references, letters of recommendation, etc.). Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset. We kindly decline all sales and marketing contacts.
