PhD Position Studying Thermal Energy Storage in Rocks

The goal of the project is to model how a rock bed thermal energy storage can be coupled to a biomass gasifier operating on the Danish electricity grid. This will require integrating scaled down version of both the rock bed and the biomass gasifier and coupling them to a simple grid level model to study how they can interact under real economic conditions in Denmark. In addition to the modelling, test facilities for both the biomass gasifier and a small-scale rock bed thermal storage have been built at DTU Ris. A major part of the PhD project will be to design and run experiments that can verify the models that will be developed. This will include experimental data analysis and comparison to model predictions. The project will be carried out as a collaboration between DTU Energy Conversion and Storage and DTU Chemical Engineering. The main task of this three year PhD position are the modelling of a thermal energy storage and biomass gasifier coupled to the Danish electricity grid. This will include a more detailed CFD of the rock storage that can be scaled down for use in the grid level model. Running experiments and analysing data will also be a major aspect of the project. The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
