PhD in Integrated Medical Devices at EPFL

International students are invited for a PhD scholarship at EPFL. Applications should be submitted as soon as possible.

The Integrated Actuators Laboratory is specialized in modelling (Analytical and FEM) and design optimization of rotating and linear electric or piezoelectric motors and actuators. Different medical devices have been developed since many years and lately, in collaboration with “Hpitaux Universitaires de Genve - HUG”, a proof of concept for an adaptive sole intended for foot insensitive patients has been developed. The PhD study will be pursued in the context of the Bridge Program, i.e. in between FNS (scientific research) and Innosuisse (link with industry).

The candidate will be in charge for the development of an innovative and fully functional sole, being able to self-adapt to the patient’s gait and pace on the whole surface of the foot plant in order to efficiently release the pressure underneath the evolving painful zones. Electromechanical, mechanical, fluidics, and electronics modelling will be few of the tasks to be dealt with during the project.

The doctoral studies include teaching duties (20%) to bachelor and Master EPFL students as well.

Start date: after being accepted by the EDRS Doctoral program of EPFL (

Candidates should send their CV, letter of motivation and summary of their previous projects to
