Open Position for A PhD Scholarship in Microbiology and Immunology

A new PhD position in molecular biology is available at Technical University of Munich. The funds for this fellowship are available for 4 years. Applications should be submitted as soon as possible.

at TranslaTUM, Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich (TUM)

Activities and responsibilities

In project P11 "Deciphering the role of tumor-site specific dysbiosis in subtypes of colorectal cancer" of CRC 1371, we aim to decipher colorectal cancer subtype-specific bacterial risk profiles and to delineate host-microbiota interactions that are relevant for tumor-initiation and -progression. We are deploying genetic models to study molecular, immunological and translational aspects of colorectal cancer. One focus in the past few years was the development of novel preclinical model systems and a novel (endoscopy-based) orthotopic transplantation model for genetic target identification and validation. The focus of the advertised project will be on the functional characterization of the intestinal microbiota and on the identification of host-microbiota interactions that are relevant for development of colorectal cancer subtypes.

We are a young and enthusiastic team and offer intensive training and mentoring. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn a wide spectrum of genetic, molecular biology, biochemical as well as immunological and cellular biology techniques. She/he will be exposed to cutting edge methods to study translational aspects of cancer (e.g. working with preclinical in vivo models, organoid culture, orthotopic transplantations of organoids, CRISPR/Cas9, molecular and colonoscopy-based in vivo imaging, in vivo transposon mutagenesis, RNA and exome sequencing). She/he will also be able to gain insights into clinically relevant aspects of cancer development through proximity to the clinical facilities and through the interdisciplinary composition of our team and closely collaborating groups.

Qualification profile

Candidates hold a Master degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology or equivalent. They are open minded, active and have a good command of the English language (oral and written).

Salary and duration

Payment is according to the wage agreement of the civil service TV-L, 65% of E13 for PhD student positions for 4 years.
