Behaviour of Clay for Geo-environmental and Geotechnical Applications Postgraduate Research Tuition Fee Scholarship

A new opening PhD position in environmental sciences is available at The University of Sydney, Australia. The deadline for applying is January 29, 2019.

Behaviour of Clay for Geo-environmental and Geotechnical Applications Postgraduate Research Tuition Fee Scholarship

An opportunity is available for an outstanding PhD scholar with experience in working with clay soils for geo-environmental and geo-technical applications.

Clay soils are amongst the most-widely used material in human history, owing to a range of remarkable properties, amongst which is the ability to close fissures and cracks autonomously. However, the conditions under which this capability is manifested and the reasons for it, are not well understood. On the other hand, self-healing and self-sealing of clay offer the promise of material that can repair itself and can therefore be deployed in extreme conditions, such as those under high-temperature and/or aggressive chemical environment.

The project will make contribution to the fundamental science of clay behaviour and lead to practical applications in geomechanics, engineering and environmental science.

Applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission for full-time studies in a PhD within the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney, and be willing to undertake research in the field of behaviour of clay for geo-environmental and geotechnical applications.

Applicants must also hold an Honours degree (First Class or Second Class upper) or a Master’s degree in a related field of engineering or science, or equivalent.

The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the nomination of the relevant research supervisor(s) in the School of Civil Engineering.

The Scholarship will provide the academic course fees for a successful international applicant, for 12 research periods. The recipient may apply for an extension of up to 2 research periods.

Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the Scholarship will be deducted from the maximum duration of the Scholarship excluding the potential extension period.

The Scholarship is for commencement in relevant research period in which it is offered. It cannot be deferred or transferred to another area of research without prior approval.

No other amount is payable. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funding.

Progression is subject to passing the annual progress review.

Further information on the area of research can be obtained from Professor Abbas Elzein at:
