Assistant Professor in Neurobiology at University of Amsterdam

University of Amsterdam is offering professor position in cognitive science. The funding allows successful candidates to work for two years in the first instance. Citizens of any country are eligible to apply before the deadline: February 13, 2019.

Are you an enthusiastic colleague experienced with neurobiological skills and much interest in teaching and working with students? Do you want to gain (more) experience in teaching and contribute to the development of education? Then we are specifically looking for you, because this position will include conducting neurobiological research and teaching in the Bachelor and Master programmes of the Faculty of Science.

The Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) is one of the largest institutes of the Faculty of Science.

In the Lucassen ‘Brain Plasticity" group’of SILS we focus on understanding the different levels of adaptation and plasticity of the brain in relation to (early life) stress, nutrition, exercise, inflammation, medication, memory and cognition, and during brain disorders like Alzheimer's disease, major depression, epilepsy and Traumatic Brain Injury.

You will be teaching in the Bachelor Psychobiology and Master programmes (50%) and perform neurobiological research within the themes of the Brain Plasticity group (50%).

The Psychobiology programme is a unique and successful bachelor in which students learn how the brain functions, from molecules to consciousness. Our group runs two Master programmes in the Psychobiology curriculum; one on 'Psychopharmaca and Pathophysiology' by Lucassen/Korosi, and one on 'Brain and Cognitive Sciences' by Krugers. You will participate in several courses, coordination and activities of the Psychobiology Bachelor and Masters programmes of the Faculty of science.

There is considerable flexibility regarding the neurobiological research you can submitfor this position but your main topic should align with common themes in the Brain Plasticity group and e.g. focus on either plasticity at the molecular, cellular, network or developmental/behavioural level. A strong affinity with research on (early) stress (resilience), (mechanisms underlying) learning and memory, network physiology, neurogenesis and development and experience with innovative techniques, molecular work and preclinical/behavioural studies are considered a plus.

Within the Faculty of Science, newly appointed Assistant Professors , who do not yet have a BKO certificate, follow a didactic training trajectory, which should lead up to completion of a certificate qualifying yourself for academic teaching (basiskwalificatie onderwijs, BKO) within two years.
