Senior University Lecturer in Bioinformaticst at Lund University

Lund University is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a lecturer position in environmental sciences. This position is available for three years. The deadline for applying is February 01, 2019.

The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into nine departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1500 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

The Department of Biology contains all biological research in Lund within neighbouring buildings, providing unique opportunities to create innovative education and research programs in biology. A total of around 300 people, of which about 80 are PhD students, work at the department. Research at the department covers many biological disciplines, from molecular biology to ecosystems. We offer several Bachelor and Master programs in bioinformatics, ecology, biology and molecular biology for both Swedish and international students. Job description

The position entails research and teaching in bioinformatics with applications in ecology, biology and molecular biology. Teaching will be at undergraduate and graduate levels, and will also include some teaching administration. The successful candidate is expected to actively participate and to be involved in the development of our teaching programs in bioinformatics and related areas, as well as supervision of student's projects.

The candidate is also expected to develop and further strengthen bioinformatics and its use and applications in other research areas in our department. The successful candidate is expected to be able to provide external long term funding of the position. The work assignments of the position, as well as the relative proportions of research and teaching, may change over time.

Eligibility

Those qualified for appointment as a Senior Lecturer are persons who have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding research competence. (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 4, section 4).

This position requires a PhD degree or equivalent in a relevant area.

It is a requirement that the successful candidate has completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning or has acquired equivalent knowledge by other means. In certain cases, exceptions can be made from this requirement.

For academic staff at Lund University the general qualification requirements are to be suited to and having the general ability required to complete the duties of the post well.

Basis of assessment

The successful candidate should have documented research skills and experience of ongoing research areas in the department is required. The applicant should describe their current research themes and present a research plan for the next few years. The applicant should also indicate how their research will complement existing research within the Department. Scientific qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of the scope and quality of past research, including grants awarded, projects completed, and peer-reviewed scientific publications.

A bioinformatics group linked to and financed by NBIS – National Bioinformatics Infrastructure is situated in the Department of Biology. Experience of working or co-operating with this infrastructure is a merit.

Today, research and postgraduate studies at the University are largely based on the ability and competence of the individual researcher to obtain external funding. Hence, a capability to obtain research grants in national or international competition is a requirement. Ability of the candidate to supply external long term funding of the position is a strong merit.

Documented experience of teaching on advanced courses in bioinformatics as well as teaching bioinformatics curricula on advanced courses in ecology, biology and molecular biology is a requirement. Previous experience with development of new course curricula in bioinformatics for master students in ecology, biology, molecular biology is a merit. Teaching experience in programming and large scale DNA sequencing is a merit. Experience of supervising student projects with applications for ecology, biology and molecular biology is also a merit.

Documented experience in communicating science, and the societal values of research, is likewise a merit.

Importance will be given to how the applicant, through documented skills and experience, can strengthen and supplement the Departments research and teaching.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise.

When making the appointment, consideration will be given to the Lund University Appointment Rules.

It is expected that a non-Swedish-speaking candidate will acquire sufficient knowledge in about three years to teach and communicate in Swedish.
