Senior Lecturer in Developmental Psychology at Lund University

The Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University is one of the leading education and research institutions in Sweden and operates both in Lund and Helsingborg.

The Department of Psychology combines education with research and has in recent years been very successful in the competition for external research funds. Central research areas include occupational and organizational psychology, clinical psychology, cognition, neuropsychology, personality and social psychology and developmental psychology.

Many of our courses are developed in connection with research projects, and students are given the opportunity to gain access to current research findings from teachers who themselves are active researchers in their respective areas. Our education environment has long been highly internationalized.

The area of developmental psychology focuses on describing and understanding, preferably by combining different perspectives and methodological approaches, the process of how different functions and skills are integrated throughout the course of development, as well as how variability in different features in a child's environment (family, school, society) affect their cognitive and psychosocial development and well-being. The Department of Psychology works closely with several faculties and research centres at LU, which gives us access to infrastructure, not only for behavioural observations but also for psychophysiological measurements and brain imaging techniques. We are looking for a senior lecturer in developmental psychology, who will teach and conduct research in child and youth development.


Teaching and examination primarily in developmental psychology, as well as in advanced research methods in developmental psychology and developmental psychopathology at an undergraduate and Master's level, and on both PET programs and freestanding courses. The duties also include course management, course administration, supervision of undergraduate and Master's students, and work related to contract education.

Teaching in other subjects may occur. The teaching is conducted in both Swedish and English. The duties also include research and dissemination of research findings, and participation in the department's work to generate external research funding within the area of developmental psychology, as well as promotion of the department's infrastructure and educational development work.


Those qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer are individuals who have been awarded a PhD specialising in developmental psychology, have demonstrated teaching expertise, have completed 5 weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. Unless there are special circumstances, parts of the training in higher education teaching and learning may be conducted during the first year of employment. For appointment, the individual must have a documented ability to teach in both Swedish/other Scandinavian languages and English.

Assessment criteria

Equal attention will be given to the assessment of teaching and research competence. In the selection, the applicants' research and teaching competence will be granted equal importance.

The applicants' teaching competence is to be well documented. In the assessment of the applicants' teaching expertise, emphasis will be placed on the quality of teaching. The scope, breadth and depth will also be taken into account. In addition, the applicants' documented ability to plan, initiate, manage and develop courses and modules, and the ability to link the teaching to research, will be considered. Teaching expertise includes also a documented ability to contribute to the development of higher education teaching and learning, and the quality of education.

In the assessment of research expertise, special emphasis will be placed on research activity (scope/ scientific quality), the ability to initiate and independently conduct research, the ability to obtain research funding in national competition, and the proven ability to interact with both fellow researchers and society in a broad sense. Experience/skills in the application of advanced research methods in developmental psychology is considered a qualification. Consideration will be given to how the applicant's research profile complements the current research environment at the Department of Psychology, and the applicant's potential to contribute to a positive development of the research field of developmental psychology and the department as a whole.

Because the advertised position involves teaching and assessment within the context of the degree programme in psychology, special consideration will be given to applicants who are registered psychologists with experience of working with children and adolescents. Experience of psychology work with children and adolescents, and experience of teaching developmental psychopathology constitute an assessment criterion.

Administrative skills are demonstrated through the ability to plan, develop and manage courses, and the ability to cooperate in both teaching and research. Administrative skills are important for the position, and will be considered in the assessment.

Personal traits such as thoroughness, ability to take personal responsibility, and ability to cooperate are considered important in order to perform the duties well. Personal circumstances (e.g. parental leave) that are important should be reported among the applicants' qualifications and experiences.
