Research Assistant in Food and Nutrition Science at Chalmers University of Technology

Applications are invited for a postdoc position in nanotechnology to join Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. The initial contract for this position is two years and posible to extend. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before January 06, 2019.

The Department of Biology and Biological Engineering was founded January 1 2015, and started off with high ambitions. The aim was to grow and become a leading center of innovation by combining the latest research in life sciences with biochemistry. And the department got off to flying start. In its first year, the numbers for publication, citation and external funding have been excellent.

The department consists of four divisions, each conducting outstanding research in the areas of industrial biotechnology, systems biology, chemical biology and food science. The overall goal is to help build a sustainable society and improve human health. Nearly 200 people from 20 countries are currently working at the department. The human gut microbiota play a key role in human health. Accumulating evidence suggest that gut microbiota can modify the effects of diet and medication on disease risk factors and the underlying mechanisms are getting uncovered. Gut microbiota is highly dynamic but key questions are how and to what extent the gut microbiota can be altered in a beneficial direction by optimal selection of commonly consumed foods and if the effects are similar across different consumer groups. The overall aim of the current Proof of Concept study is to adapt and evaluate to what extent a specific food concept for promotion of a healthy gut microbiota can shift gut microbiota into a more healthy profile across different consumer groups, i.e. assess the potential for personalized preventive nutrition. A dietary intervention study in humans will be conducted in collaboration with expertise in gasteroenterology and hepatology from Uppsala Universit, expertise in gut microbiota from Lund and in collaboration with a small start-up company from Stockholm, Synbiotic Kitchen.

This will require clinical-, dieteticcal-, and administrative support by a highly motivated and skilled person with documented experiences from dietary intervention studies. The assisstant will recruit study participants, handle bookings, assisting at the study facilities with all kind of duties including providing dietary advice and coaching to participants, handling and preparing biological samples, preparing food, assisting nurses and study co-ordinator and PI. The duties will also include entering of data into the study database, including summarising and entering dietary data.

Major responsibilities

- Be responsible for recruitment of participants to randomized controlled dietary intervention trial including communication through email, phone and guidance at the clinic.

- Coordinate the execution of the dietary intervention study and keeping contact with study participants.

-Provide dietary advice and coaching of participants.

- Dietary assessment.

- Take care of and process samples drawn from subjects during clinic days.

Your major responsibility asresearcher is to perform your own research in a research group.You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Temporary employment for one year, full-time.

Qualifications

- Dietician, Nutritionist, Food Scientist degree at BSc-level.

- Communicate in Swedish and English.

- Report results and handling of biological samples.

The position of researcher requires a doctoral degree in a relevant field.
