Research Assistant at Imperial College London

Imperial College London, UK is offering postdoctoral position in mathematics. This position is available for 12 months. Potential candidates should apply before January 06, 2019.

The Department of Chemical Engineering invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate* (PDRA) to join our team with an EPSRC funded feasibility project "Enhancing Machine Learning with Physical Constraints to Predict Microstructure Evolution", in collaboration with the University of Sheffield.

The project seeks to develop novel machine learning approaches in the context of spatio-temporal physical phenomena, applied to the demixing of polymer and complex fluid mixtures. Specifically, we will develop novel mathematical tools that enable the incorporation of physical constraints into empirical machine learning. The work will be complemented by a second PDRA, at the University of Sheffield, focussing on constrained Gaussian processes and/or uncertainty quantification, assessing the applicability of orthogonal basis decomposition methods in constraining models to be physically obedient. The successful candidate will focus on developing unconstrained Gaussian processes and will generate spatio-temporal data, both computational and experimental, on polymer-polymer demixing.

The research associate will be supervised by Professor Joo Cabral and work in close collaboration with another Research Associate and Professors Nigel Clarke (Physics) and Richard Wilkinson (Mathematics) at the University of Sheffield.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on a challenging research project across two leading academic institutions and develop multidisciplinary research and leadership skills. This position requires an innovative researcher who is able to work independently and with other researchers and collaborators on this project. You will have the ability to generate new ideas, to test them and apply them and be able to demonstrate an enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range 33,380 - 35,061 per annum.

The post is available immediately and the appointment is for 12 months in the first instance. The post is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus).

Informal enquiries about the post can be made to Professor Joo Cabral (j.cabral@imperial.ac.uk).

To apply, please select the “Apply now” button at the top of this page. Please ensure you include a completed application form with your submission.

Further information about the post is available in the job description.

Should you have any queries about the application process please contact chemeng.hr@imperial.ac.uk.
