Postdoc Position for 2 Years in Biophysics Immunology Super-resolution Microscopy

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship position in cell biology to join ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Applications will be evaluated on a continuous basis.

As a leading international academic institution at the cutting edge of health sciences and technology, the aim of the Department of Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST) is to create the foundations for sustaining and improving the quality of life for people into old age. The Department of Health Sciences and Technology will accelerate the transfer of knowledge and technology in clinics, industry and society, and educate a new generation of students at the interface of science and technology. The Klotzsch Group is part of the Laboratory for Applied Mechanobiology (Prof. Dr. Viola Vogel) and positioned on the interface of state-of-the-art microscopy and nanomedicine with the focus on immunology. new position. We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated individuals interested in pursuing their research in the multi-disciplinary and challenging area of state-of-the-art single molecule microscopy techniques such as super-resolution microscopy, AFM and optical tweezer to gain insights into general aspects of mechanobiology, T-cell activation, gene expression and immunology. Gene regulation for T-cell activation happens on a very fast timescale as the immune response is critical for the body’s defense mechanism. The chromatins' three-dimensional organization in T-cells as well as its interaction with nuclear lamina and the consequential impact on gene regulation is poorly understood. Our research focuses on how mechanical forces can directly influence cellular functions, such as the T-cell activation, and furthermore elucidate how they ultimately change gene expression. The mechanical force triggers structural/conformational changes of the nuclear lamina network; hence, genes encoded in chromatin proximal to lamina can be up/down regulated. For verifying the new concepts and the models, a Lattice Light Sheet microscope will be built and evaluated in detail. You may expect a challenging and scientifically highly exciting position in a dynamic, international team at one of the world-wide leading technical universities. Furthermore, we strongly support participation at international conferences and offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits as well as outstanding research and laboratory facilities.

The candidate must have a PhD in biomedical engineering, immunology, cell biology and/or physics with excellent grades, fundamental knowledge of cell biology, microscopy, good communication skills, fluency in English and the willingness to work hard as part of an international team. In addition, you should be interested in super-resolution microscopy, immunobiology and gene expression.
