Postdoc Position Cell Biologist/biochemist

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral associate position in biochemistry at University of Cambridge. The initial contract for this position is 6 months. The deadline for applying is January 06, 2019.

Applications are invited for a Wellcome Trust funded Research Assistant/Research Associate position to join the lab of Dr. Paul Conduit in the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge. The appointment will be for a period of up to 6 months in the first instance, funded by a Wellcome Trust Developing Concept Award, and the work will be carried out in collaboration with two other labs in Cambridge (Hyvonen and Gergely). We expect the post-holder to start sometime between February and April 2019 and it is likely that they will perform some experiments within the collaborating labs.

This is a proof of concept project and the post-holder will use human cell culture assays and biochemistry to test whether the protein MOZART1 (MZT1) could offer a new target for cancer therapy. MZT1 is a component of the y-tubulin ring complex (y-TuRC), which nucleates microtubules in cells. The post-holder will perform RNAi-mediated knock down of MZT1 in various primary cancer cell lines and assess the effect on the cell cycle by flow cytometry. They will also purify protein fragments and perform immunoprecipitation experiments to assess how MZT1 binds to the y-TuRC. We expect applicants to be competent in cell culture and biochemistry prior to application; the project would ideally suit a cell biologist/biochemist looking for stop-gap work between contracts.

Essential skills: – PhD in cell biology or Biochemistry, or be close to the completion of their degree – Experience with cell culture – Experience with molecular cloning (generating vectors for transfection) – Experience with protein purification and immunoprecipitation experiments – Excellent analytic and scientific benchwork skills – Good interpersonal skills and an ability to work as part of a team – The ability to organise time and work effectively, independently and responsibly
