PhD Scholarship Position in Odontological Science Restorative Treatment or Extraction of First Permanent Molars with Severe Molar Incisor Hypomineralization

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position at University of Gothenburg. The funds for this position are available for 5 years. Applications are invited up to January 07, 2019.

PhD student position in Odontological Science – Restorative treatment or extraction of first permanent molars with severe molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH)

Project title: Restorative treatment or extraction of first permanent molars with severe molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) – a randomized prospective multicenter study

General information about third-cycle studies: The PhD education inOdontological Science corresponds to studies of 240 credits in total. The studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. The studies comprisecarrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. For more information about third-cycle studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, see

Project:The first permanent molar often exhibits regions with hypomineralized enamel when erupted. One or more of the teeth may be affected. The condition is called Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) [Weerheijm et al. 2001] and is common in child populations (2.4 – 40.2%) [Jlevik 2010]. Clinically, the porous, hypomineralized areas appear as white-yellow to brownish demarcated opaque spots. In these areas, the enamel is insufficiently mineralized to varying degrees and can break apart [Jlevik & Norn 2000].The affected teeth create problems for the child as well as for the dentist. The teeth can be very painful, e.g., when brushing teeth, ingesting cold drinks or ice cream. The teeth with severely damaged enamel are in need of repair shortly after eruption due to disintegrated enamel and subsequent caries [Leppniemi et al 2006, Jlevik & Klingberg 2002, Espelid et al. 2009].As a consequence of repeated painful treatments, the children show more treatment problems and dental fear and anxiety [Jlevik & Klingberg 2002]. In cases of widespread disintegration, disturbing hypersensitivity and/or increasing dental fear and anxiety, extraction may be a treatment option.

The views on the benefit of extracting first molars with a poor prognosis are contradictory and there is little evidence for an optimal time and pattern (balanced and/or compensatory) for the extraction [Williams & Gowans 2003].The objective is to evaluate long-term extraction therapy, as compared to restorative treatment of the first permanent molars with extensive treatment needs as a result of MIH, in a national multicenter study.

Study design: A multicenter study in the form of a randomized case-control study. 200 children are included in the study (100 in the extraction group, 100 in the restorative treatment group). Models, Panoramic and Profile X-rays, and photos are taken. Surveysare to be completed. Thereafter, the children are randomized to restorative or extraction treatment. The treatments are performed at the specialist clinic. Follow-ups are done at the specialist clinics at the age of 11 and 15 years. Ordinary examinations at the general dentist according to regular routines. At our department, the PhD studentwill be given extensive, creative space to develop the project and the resources to produce advanced results. The PhD studentwill also benefit from being part of our dynamic team.

A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle studiesif he or she:

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad A person meets thespecific entry requirements for third-cycle studiesif he or she: has successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

– specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields – experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology – scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. Time limited employment (temporary),4 years.Extent:100%. Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute ofOdontology. First day of employment: as agreed.
