PhD Scholarship Position in Medical Science Characterization of Viral Non-coding Rna Rpms1

University of Gothenburg, Sweden is inviting excellent candidates to apply for a PhD position in medical sciences. This position is available for 4 years. Applications are welcome before January 08, 2019.

General information about third-cycle studies: The PhD education in Medical Science corresponds to studies of 240 credits in total. The studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. The studies comprisecarrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. For more information about third-cycle studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, see

Project: The majority of all adults in the world are infected by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Following a primary infection of this herpesvirus during childhood or adolescence, EBV remains latent in our B-lymphocytes for the rest of our lives. For most of us this latent infection will go unnoticed. But for approximately 200,000 patients world-wide each year EBV-infection turns into a fatal disease in the form of hematological (post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disease, Hodgkin's lymphoma and Burkitt's lymphoma) and epithelial malignancies (gastric adenocarcinoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma). However, despite decades of research, no specific treatment is currently available for EBV-associated malignancies.

Our research aim is to identify novel targets for the treatment of EBV-associated malignancies. In particular, we are interested in studying viral genes essential for tumour maintenance, and mutational landscapes during tumour development. Our projects encompass clinical and molecular studies of the EBV-associated malignancies using clinical samples from pre-malignant and malignant stages as well as cell lines. We use a wide range of molecular and cell biological techniques including molecular cloning, CRISPR/Cas9, massive parallel sequencing and chromatin immunoprecipitation. To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle studiesif he or she:

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad A person meets thespecific entry requirements for third-cycle studiesif he or she: has successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

– specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields – experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology – scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. Time limited employment (temporary),4 years.Extent:100%. Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute of Biomedicine, Department of Infectious Diseases. First day of employment: as agreed.
