PhD Scholarship in Mechanical Characteristics of Powder Based Metals

A new opening PhD position in material sciences is available at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. The initial contract for this position is five years. The deadline to apply is January 10, 2019.

Solid Mechanics is a classic engineering science discipline, ranging from basic to applied science. The topic can be regarded as a link between materials science and applied mechanics with emphasis on the latter. Solid Mechanics deals with the mechanical properties of materials and structures. The research at the department is focused on computational methods, fracture mechanics, composite mechanics, contact mechanics, mechanics of materials, paper mechanics and fatigue. A primary objective of the research is to develop methods for reliable design of structures, materials, systems and processes.

The Department of Solid Mechanics offers a Ph.D.-position oriented towards the development of a tool for predicting the mechanical characteristics of powder based metals accounting for porosity. The research is fundamental and interdisciplinary with strong connections to material science, in particular regarding characterization of the microstructure and the porosity. The doctoral student will be supervised by researchers from both Solid Mechanics and Materials Science and Engineering. The project is part of the recently organized Centre for Mechanics and Materials Design and will be conducted in close cooperation with Hgans AB that supplies industrial supervision, materials, experiments and internship. Within the center many doctoral students will work together and participate in common center activities.

The research concerns material characteristics at both statical and fatigue loading.

A suitable background for this position would be a Master of Science in Engineering Mechanics with an interest in Materials Science or, alternatively, a Master of Science in Materials Science with an interest in Solid Mechanics and Material Mechanics.

The employment is limited to five years including up to 20 % departemental duties (mainly teaching assistant at tutorials and laboratory works).

In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work.

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year and may thereafter be extended. Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
