PhD Scholarship in Materials Science at KTH Royal Institute of Technology

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden is inviting excellent candidates to apply for a PhD position in materials engineering. The funds for this fellowship are available for two years. Applications are welcome before January 11, 2019.

We are looking for a doctoral student, who will be working at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. In this department, the research is focused on engineering materials and the linkage between process-structure-properties, which is also reflected in the organization of the department in three research units: Process, Structure and Properties. The doctoral student will join the Unit of Structures.

The doctoral studies will be on materials design of cemented carbides within the Hero-m 2i (Hierarchical engineering of industrials materials to innovation) competence center,

Typically cemented carbides consist of hard carbide phases, mainly WC, embedded in a ductile binder phase, usually Co, but since Co can cause serious health problems and the supply is limited there is a need to substitute it. The aim of this project is to use Integrated Computational Materials Engineering, ICME, to develop modelling tools aimed at the replacement of Co. Although the main emphasis is on new theoretical predictive tools regarding the microstructure evolution during process and in service, and the related materials properties, experimental verification and measurements play an essential role.

Suitable background for this position is a M.Sc. degree in materials science, materials physics or related topic.

In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work.

Excellent English, both in written and oral communication, is required for the position. Further, knowledge and experience of modeling tools such as Thermo-Calc, DICTRA and TC-PRISMA is favorable.

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year and may thereafter be extended. Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.

Apply for the position and admission through KTH’s recruitment system. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the application is complete in accordance with the instructions in the advertisement.

Applications must be received at the last closing date at midnight, CET/CEST (Central European Time/entral European Summer Time).
