PhD Project in Fog Computing-based Autonomous Systems

DTU Compute's Section for Embedded Systems Engineering, would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting February 1st, 2019. The project is financed by a DTU PhD schollarship in collaboration with Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Our department DTU Compute is an internationally unique academic environment spanning the science disciplines mathematics, statistics and computer science. At the same time we are an engineering department covering informatics and communication technologies (ICT) in their broadest sense. Finally, we play a major role in addressing the societal challenges of the digital society where ICT is a part of every industry, service, and human endeavour.

DTU Compute strives to achieve research excellence in its basic science disciplines, to achieve technological leadership in research and innovation, and to address societal challenges in collaboration with partners at DTU and other academic institutions, nationally and internationally, and, equally important, with industry and organizations. DTU Compute plays a central role in education at all levels of the engineering programmes at DTU – both in terms of our scientific disciplines and our didactic innovation. Fog Computing (also known as Real-Time Edge Computing) is a logical extension from Cloud Computing towards the edge of the network (where "things", such as infrastructure and autonomous systems, are located), enabling applications that demand guarantees in safety, security, and real-time behavior. Fog Computing is envisioned to be used in several application areas, such as Smart Cities, Smart Transportation, Smart Energy, automotive, robotics and industrial automation. Future autonomous systems will rely on Fog Computing to deliver the increasing computation and communication needs at high-level of dependability.

The objective of this research project is to develop a Fog Computing platform for the safe and secure deployment of autonomous systems applications, while guaranteeing the non-functional properties, such as real-time behavior, dependability and security. The research will be validated on autonomous system platforms from the automotive area (DTU's focus) and the maritime area (NTNU's focus).

Candidates must have a master's degree (120 ECTS) in Computer Science and/or Engineering, or equivalent academic qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates who can document (i) knowledge of algorithms (especially optimization metaheuristics), (ii) experience with scientific paper writing, and in addition have a very high average grades in their master's program. Furthermore, good command of the English language is essential. Since this project is in collaboration with NTNU, the PhD student is expected to enrol in a double-degree program with NTNU, which has additional requirements related to NTNU, including spending a full year at NTNU and fulfilling their degree requirements.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the DTU Compute PhD School Programme.
