Lecturer in New Media and Digital Culture at University of Amsterdam

The Faculty of Humanitiesoffers the opportunity of a lectureship for recent graduates. You will havethe opportunity to teach in a dynamic academic environment in which newdidactic methods are developed and where you will receive support for further career development. The Media and Informationand New Mediaprogramsaretaught in English.

As a lecturerinNew Media and Digital Culture you will be teaching in a dynamic context in which new educational methods are being developed. You will be supervised closely during yourappointment. Additional didactical trainingcanalsobepart of the appointment. Based on the candidate’s educational portfolio, previously acquired competences will be taken into consideration.

Our ideal candidate has considerable knowledgeofthe study ofNew Media and Digital Culture in the humanities, especially in the areas of digital methods and critical internet culture.He or she will alsohave demonstrable affinitywith theareasofmedia arts, media history, mediatheoryandsocial mediacritique.Up-to-dateInternet skillsare essential, as iscurrentknowledge ofdigitalcultureas evidenced by active participation in online culture.Practical experience in workinganalyticallywithonline platforms(e.g.,Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube)and web-based applications (e.g., wikis)ishighly desirable.

The new media and digital culture team is part of the MediaStudies department and concerns itself with research strategiesfor the critical study of Internetculture. Aslecturer you willteach on both the bachelor’s and master’s degreelevels, in courses concerned with such topics as datajournalism,media theory,new media practice, new mediaresearch methods, mediahistoryas well ascontemporary themes in digital culture.You may also teach more general courses in Media Studies on BA level,in the programofMedia and Information and areexpected tosuperviseboth BA and MA theses.Ideally, candidates alsohave researchinterests and academic ambitions in new media and digital culture.

There will bethreeto fourpositionsfrom 15,2 to 19 hoursa weekeach (0,4 to0,5fte), depending on the number of applicants.The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period ofoneand a halfyears(starting 1February2019until 1 August 2020). The gross monthly salary will rangefrom 2,640 (scale 10) to4,852 (scale 11), based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week)in accordance with the CollectiveLabour Agreement ofDutch Universities.
