Researcher/phd Position in Molecular Oncology at University of Amsterdam

A new opening PhD position in maxillofacial surgery is available at University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. This position is available for 2 years. The deadline for applying is November 15, 2018.

The Departments of Maxillofacial Surgery/Oral Pathology (VUmc/ACTA), Pathology (VUmc) and Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery (VUmc) are searching for a talented and enthusiastic researcher in molecular oncology. One of the joined research projects is focused on genetic risk assessment of oral premalignant lesions. The outstanding research records and expertise of the involved PIs and the multidisciplinary character of this collaboration provide talented young scientists an inspiring environment to pursue their ambition in molecular cancer research. Both MDs and PhD students are invited to respond.

Some oral cancers are preceded by macroscopically visible white lesions, named leukoplakia. Approximately 2 tot 3% of patients with these lesions develop cancer on an annual basis, accumulating to 50% in 15-20 years. Risk assessment of these lesions is a major problem as more standard parameters such as histological abnormalities, size and other parameters appear as minor and rather inconsistent risk factors. The consequence is that all patients are treated when possible although efficacy was never proven, and have to remain under frequent lifelong surveillance. When cancers develop they may recur after treatment and additional tumors may arise at different sites in the mouth.

In this project we aim to develop a molecular algorithm, based on genetic markers in these lesions, that can predict malignant transformation, and will allow a personalized clinical management.
