Research Assistant in Uncertainty Quantification of District Energy Systems

University of Cambridge is delighted to offer a postdoctoral scholar position in computer science. The initial contract for this position is 24 months and posible to extend. Applications are invited up to January 04, 2019.

The Department of Engineering seeks a Research Assistant/Associate in Uncertainty Quantification of District Energy Systems to develop models to test resilience of district-scale energy at high spatial and temporal resolution. The main tasks will include: (a) quantification of time-varying uncertainties in input parameters, (b) investigate uncertainties due to future changes and short-term events, and their influence on energy systems, © investigate methods to model and propagate uncertainties to quantify resilience of energy systems. The post holder will link the district-scale models to both national and sub-national infrastructure planning. This kind of multi-dimensional and multi-physics tools will help us understand why certain energy policies are more or less successful than others, geographically, socially, and physically. It will also enable sustainable infrastructure planning that is aligned with UK’s carbon targets and is, at the same time, locally robust.

The post holder will be mentored by Dr. Ruchi Choudhary (Engineering, Cambridge) who is currently based at the Data-centric Engineering Program of the Alan Turing Institute (ATI) in London. Therefore, the successful candidate will be located at ATI in London.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are: (a) expertise in numerical modelling of energy systems and built environments, (b) excellent computational skills (for eg. in MATLAB/Python), © Experience with statistical techniques relevant for uncertainty quantification. Candidates are expected to have obtained a PhD or equivalent industrial/project experience in Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant discipline.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience). Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.

Please ensure that you upload your Curriculum Vitae (CV) and a covering letter, name & affiliation of 3 referees, and 2 relevant publications in the Upload section of the online application. If you upload any additional documents which have not been requested, we will not be able to consider these as part of your application. Please submit your application by midnight on the closing date.

If you have any questions about this vacancy or the application process, please contact Ms. Sharon Nightingale (div-d@eng.cam.ac.uk).
