Research Assistant at University of Cambridge

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral associate position in applied mathematics at University of Cambridge. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for 24 months in UK. The deadline to apply is January 15, 2019.

Department of Physics and / or Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Limit of Tenure: 24 months in the first instance (Earliest possible start date 1st September 2019 but no later than 1st October 2019)

Applications are invited for Research Assistants / Associates positions, funded by an ERC Starting grant, to work with Dr B. Bri at the Department of Physics and/or the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge.

The posts are for theoretical investigations of quantum many-particle systems, including certain strongly correlated forms of topological phases, in part motivated by developments in solid-state quantum devices, ultra-cold atoms and quantum information theory. The successful candidates will have a PhD (or be close to obtaining) in condensed matter theory or a closely related subject. They will have demonstrated a strong background in the theory of quantum many-body systems, including expertise in relevant mathematical and/or numerical approaches (e.g., quantum/statistical field theory, matrix product state methods and / or exact diagonalisation). Familiarity with the theory of topological phases and quantum information theory is desirable.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate experience in writing reports, presenting results, drafting and contributing to academic papers, as evidenced by a strong publication record in leading international journals in the field. Further essential requirements include: the ability to work productively in a team, to communicate clearly and to present data to other members of the group and collaborators; experience in managing one’s own workload; high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Applicants will continually update their knowledge in the specialist area and engage in continuous professional development.

The post holder will be located in the Cavendish Laboratory, Department of Physics and/or Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), Centre for Mathematical Sciences.

Appointment as a Research Assistant / Associate is dependent on having a PhD (or closely related subject), including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD (in which case appointment will initially be made at Research Assistant and amended to Research Associate when the PhD is awarded). The Research Assistant salary (grade 5) falls within the range 26,243 to 30,395. The Research Associate (grade 7) salary falls within the range 32,236 to 39,609.

Interviews will be held with selected candidates as soon as possible after the closing date.

Ensure that you upload your Curriculum Vitae (CV), publications list and a covering letter in the upload section of the online application. Candidates can also upload a brief statement of research interests, past achievements and suitability for the role (optional). If you upload any additional documents which have not been requested, we will not be able to consider these as part of your application. Please submit your application by midnight on the closing date.

If you have any questions about the application process, please contact For questions about the scientific environment and research, please contact Dr B. Bri by email: Note that applications received via email will not be considered.
