Research Assistant at University of Cambridge

A new opening postdoc position in biotechnology is available at University of Cambridge, UK. The deadline for applying is November 20, 2018.

Research Assistant/Research Associate – Integrating Algal Biophotovoltaics for Bioelectricity Production with Agro-industrial Wastewater Remediation Using Tropical Algae (Fixed Term)

Fixed Term: The funds for this post are available until 31st March 2018

Applications are invited to apply for a Research Assistant/Associate position from a Chemical Engineering, Engineering or Physical Chemistry background. The research project is a multi-disciplinary project between the Prof Siew-Moi Phang and Dr Vengadesh Periasamy at the University of Malaya and Dr Adrian Fisher and Dr Kamran Yunus at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Cambridge.

Palm oil production is a major contributor to the Malaysian economy, however this industry is also a large source of highly polluting waste effluents. Studies to develop bioremediation process using Algea can provide amenable pathways for sustainable low-cost biofuel production, which in turn could boost the supply of energy to urban and rural areas in Malaysia.

This project is aimed to tackle the issue of generating electricity and biofuel from effluent waste. Successful candidate will be working with a team of scientists at the University of Malaya and will looking to develop and demonstrate a pilot scale Microbial Fuel Cells for feeding waste effluents to tropical algae cultures.

Applicants must have, or about to obtain, a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Engineering or Physical Chemistry. They should have a proven track record exemplified by academic publications or relevant industrial experience. Detail knowledge of Microbial Fuel Cells, handling of photosynthetic bacterial cultures and skills in design and fabrication of prototype devices is essential. Applicants will be expected to work closely and interactively with colleagues in different disciplines, to have excellent communication skills and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.

For queries relating to your application or the application process, please contact either Dr Adrian Fisher (e-mail: acf42@cam.ac.uk) or Dr Kamran Yunus (ky225@cam.ac.uk).

Applicants should provide a CV, including contact details of two referees and a covering letter describing their suitability for the role.
