Almost 1,000 employees are affiliated with the Faculty, which has about 8,000 students. The Faculty of Humanities consists of eight departments.

The Professor’s research is on the contemporary history of Europe. Possible focus areas include (but are not limited to): transnational histories of political thought and movements; histories of European integration; history of international relations; comparative political history; social and economic history of Europe.

The professor will lead the Modern European History chair group which at the moment comprises of ten colleagues, at teacher/docent, assistant professor and associate professor levels, with backgrounds in European history, European politics and European economics. The capacity group of European Studies is part of the Department of History, European Studies and Religious Studies (GER), and responsible for the BA and MA programmes in European Studies. The European Studies capacity group includes four chair groups: the Modern European History group that the professor will lead, European Governance, Modern European Literature, as well as East European Studies. The chair of the capacity group of European Studies rotates among the four professors/chair group leaders; equally rotating among GER staff are the GER Department chair, the research school ARTES, and the teaching directorship for European Studies.

There are approximately 1,000 students enrolled in European Studies programmes. The professor’s teaching takes prominent positions in these clusters. We also expect cooperation with other programmes in the Department (e.g. History) and beyond, as well as a readiness to take on administrative responsibilities at Departmental or Faculty level.

The chair's research should engage with some of the principal thematic areas of the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES), the relevant research school, as part of the wider Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research.
