Postdoctoral Positions in High-throughput Mass Spectrometry

The groupof Prof. Dr. Nicola Zamboni at the Institute of Molecular Systems Biology invite applicants for new position.The groupof Prof. Dr. Nicola Zamboni is located at the Institute of Molecular Systems Biology. Its research activity focuses on cellular metabolism, and is particularly attracted by problems of biomedical relevance and are difficult to address because complex or technically challenging. To tackle such problems, the lab resorts to a large portfolio of methods including cutting-edge mass spectrometry (i.e. metabolomics and13C flux analysis) and computational biology. The group has a long standing experience in developing such methods and applying them to a broad range of biological systems and questions. A key technology is high-throughput, non-targeted metabolomics. The lab has become very efficient in analyzing cohorts of any size between 100 and >40’000 samples. As an active member of several collaborative projects and the Swiss initiative on personalized health, the lab aims at promoting non-targeted metabolomics as a versatile tool in clinical and pre-clinical research. The Zamboni lab is seeking for postdoctoral fellows to lead these activities.

The challenge is to find an optimal tradeoff between sensitivity, accuracy, speed, and economics. The candidate is expected to plan and conduct MS analyses of large sample sets using established methods, and to contribute to novel developments. The latter might include hardware, software, or workflows. Extensive experience with non-targeted metabolomics using high-resolution LC-MS instruments is essential. Further, good command of cheminformatics analysis workflows for non-targeted metabolomics is an advantage. A substantial part of the work will be devoted in supporting our partners with data, ideas, interpretation, and know-how. This requires communication skills, organization, broad interest in applications, and thoughtfulness.
