Postdoctoral Position in Information-theoretic Methods in Machine Learning

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden is inviting applicants to apply for a postdoctoral position in artificial intelligence. The initial contract for this position is three years. All candidates regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply before December 20, 2018.

At the Department of Electrical Engineering, we conduct internationally renowned research in communication systems, biomedical engineering, antenna systems, signal processing, image analysis, automatic control, automation, and mechatronics. We offer a dynamic and international research environment with about 150 employees from more than 20 countries, and with extensive national and international research collaborations with academia, industry and society. The department provides more than 70 courses, of which most are included in the Master's Programs "Communication Engineering", "Biomedical Engineering", and "Systems, Control and Mechatronics".

Information about the research group

The research at the of Communication Systems group is focused on methods and algorithms for communication and information systems. We are involved in the design of next-generation cellular communication systems, of vehicular communication systems to enable traffic safety, of fibre-optic communication systems, and of hardware-constrained communication links. We also perform fundamental research in information theory, coding theory, and machine learning.

Our research is diverse and includes theoretical studies as well as application-driven and multidisciplinary projects. The Division employs about 35 persons. We offer an intellectually stimulating, international research environment with many opportunities for collaborations around the world. English is the working language. Candidates of any nationality are welcome to apply.

Job description

The expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI), in the broad sense, is one of the most exciting developments of the 21th century. At Chalmers, many activities are currently ongoing in this area, including the creation of a research centre in AI (

The aim of this project is to develop the theoretical side of this area by exploiting tools from information theory. Specifically, the selected candidate will work at the intersection of information theory and machine learning. Possible concrete topics include i) the characterization of information-theoretic limits for problems in statistical inference and learning, with specific emphasis on deep neural networks, and ii) the information-theoretic analyses of sequential decision-making algorithms.

Major responsibilities

The candidate will join the research team of Prof. Giuseppe Durisi, will perform research independently but also take active part in the supervision of master and PhD students in the information-theory area. The position includes also a moderate amount of teaching at Master and PhD level. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Full-time temporary employment. The duration of the contract is two years. The preferred starting date is April 2019. A later starting date is possible.

You must have a PhD degree in electrical engineering, computer science or in a related field and have an excellent publication record in top venues. The PhD degree should generally not be older than three years. Knowledge of information theory and machine learning is desirable. Experience with teaching and supervision is advantageous.

Chalmers offers a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the dynamic city ofGothenburg.
