Postdoctoral Position in Aircraft Propulsion and Cryogenic Fuel System

The department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport to achieve sustainable technological solutions. M2 holds one of Sweden's most extensive simulator centre for navigation and propulsion of ships, as well as world class laboratories within combustion engineering and wind tunnels. The department also offers and contributes to bachelor and master programs in areas such as Shipping, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering to mention a few. In addition, professional education is performed on both a national and international level, with specific designed mission training for different social actors, within our ambition for a lifelong learning. The department continuously strives to establish a cooperation between academia, industry, and society, with a great focus on utilization. M2 consists of seven different divisions within the areas of engineering and maritime sciences, and one division of administration and support.

Information about the project

The position strengthens further the division's position in developing new concepts and technology to solve future environmental problems of aviation. The turbomachinery and aero-acoustic team is composed of a number of Ph.D. students but also several senior researchers making way for an inspiring work atmosphere and a good publication climate.

Major responsibilities

As part of the Horizon 2020 project ENABLEH2, Chalmers will develop models, generate experimental data and optimization results to increase fuel efficiency of cryogenic aviation systems. The target is to push for a long term replacement of fossil fuel based solutions by means of maturing CO2 free competing technologies. To investigate shorter term solutions, the use of cryogenic methane as a fuel will also be explored.

You will play an important role in the team by modelling the future hydrogen aircraft and fuel system at top-level. The research includes key tasks such as propulsion system optimization, conceptual design of the fuel system and airframe integration. To do so a wide range of tools from our in-house CFD tools and system modelling tools available to commercial tools is at your disposition. The work will be done in close collaboration with a senior researcher and a full professor in the group. . You will also be involved in supporting a national (Swedish) research project concentrating on heat exchanger design for aero engine applications.

Through this work you will access the academic network of the Horizon 2020 research project as well as the national aeronautics network that the group has built up during the last 10-15 years.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).


To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or physics with a good relation to aviation;the degree should generally not be older than three years. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
