Postdoc Position in Mechanical Properties of High Entropy Alloys X 2

University of Cambridge is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a new opening postdoctoral fellowship position. This position is available for 18 months. Applications are invited up to December 14, 2018.

We have two vacant positions available for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering to work on a project on the multi-scale modelling of metallic alloys. The specific goals are: (i) Develop a discrete dislocation formulation to allow for climb and grain boundary sliding. These models will be employed to investigate the dependence of creep upon dispersoids and grain size. (ii) Invent homogenisation techniques based on the underlying discrete dislocation model to give crystal plasticity models augmented with internal state variables. (iii) Develop non-local plasticity and creep models based on the discrete dislocation homogenisation that can be implemented in finite element codes to simulate the response of micro-machined components.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role will include a good working knowledge of Finite Element computations with a strong continuum mechanics background and familiarity with the discrete dislocation method. The applicant will have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD (in Engineering Science or Applied Maths), and also have a strong publication record.

The key responsibilities and duties are to conduct numerical research multi-scale modelling of metallic alloys. The role holder is also expected take part in collaborative work, and contribute to seminars, and to take part in the research group’s activities publish in the open literature and liase with the sponsors.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.

Please ensure that you upload your Curriculum Vitae (CV) and a covering letter, and a list of publications in the Upload section of the online application. If you upload any additional documents which have not been requested, we will not be able to consider these as part of your application. Please submit your application by midnight on the closing date.
