Postdoc Position at Imperial College London

Imperial College London is delighted to offer a postdoctoral associate position in photonics. The deadline to apply is December 06, 2018.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant to work on a collaborative project on "Near infrared LED illumination and endoscopy for image guided cancer surgery" in the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery and the Division of Surgery, in collaboration with University College London. The project is funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).

The use of minimally invasive surgical techniques has led to major medical benefits, although the challenge of accurately identifying target tissues for resection while avoiding other critical structures remains a challenge due to the reliance on white light imaging which has limited penetration depth. There has recently been interest in imaging clinically approved contrast agents that use near infraed (NIR) fluorescence, which can propagate deeper into the tissues. However, the ability to identify regions exhibiting NIR fluorescence and contrasting these with unaffected background tissues remains a challenge. This research position will address this by designing, constructing and translating a unique multi-wavelength LED imaging system into the operating theatre based on visible and NIR light.

The post holder will be required to have an MSc or equivalent in any related discipline to engineering or physical sciences (preferably photonics/ optical/ laser physics) and previous experience of working within multidisciplinary collaborative projects Optics/biophotonics lab experience.

The post is full time and fixed term until 15 March 2019.
