Postdoc Position at Imperial College London

A new postdoctoral fellowship position in mechanical engineering is available at Imperial College London. The initial contract for this position is 12 months and posible to extend. Applicants should apply before November 18, 2018.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to join the Department of Chemical Engineering to work on a project which aims to develop a novel integrated PV and solar-thermal (PVT) hybrid solar panel concept that can deliver up to 3-4 times more useful energy (heat + electricity) compared to standard PV panels and 1.5-2 times more energy than conventional hybrid PVT panels from the same area, especially for higher heat delivery temperatures. The technology relies on splitting the solar spectrum into a part that is sent to the absorber for fluid/water heating (generating the thermal output) while the rest is sent to the PV cells for conversion to electricity, thus decoupling the absorber from the PV cells, and avoiding unnecessary heating of the PV cells.

You will develop a prototype and perform tests using the laboratory space and facilities of the Clean Energy Processes (CEP) Laboratory at Imperial College London. Outdoor testing will be performed in collaboration with the University of Nicosia in Cyprus. The prototype development will involve optimising and testing constituent components such as: solar PV cells, nano-fluids, low-emissivity and anti-reflective components, and performing detailed optical and thermal characterisation of the components prior to panel construction and performance testing.

You should have a PhD (or equivalent) in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Physics or in a related field of study. You are also expected to have a strong foundation in heat transfer, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, and specific knowledge and experience of solar energy and photovoltaic technologies is desirable.

The post is available immediately with a start date preferably on or close to 01 December 2018. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term contract for 12 months, with the possibility of extension depending on funding. The post is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus). The project will be supported by Solar Flow Limited (SFL), a recently established SME which aims to commercialise the technology.
