Postdoc Marine Population Genomics at University of Gothenburg

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoc position in evolutionary biology at University of Gothenburg. The funds for this position are available for 24 months. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before November 27, 2018.

The department for Marine Sciences ( ) is Sweden’s most complete academic environment for marine research and education, and it is one of few such institutions in Europe. The Department for Marine Sciences, founded 2015, brings together expertise in physical oceanography, marine chemistry, marine biology, marine geology, and marine heritage conservation. Thus the department has excellent opportunities to meet future challenges in marine research and education. The department of Marine Sciences are located with permanent staff in Gothenburg and at the research stations Kristineberg and Tjrn on the Swedish west cost north of Gothenburg.

At the Marine Science department there is a long tradition in working with marine snails of the genus Littorina as models for studies of local adaptation, hybrid zones and speciation. While most studies have been directed towards the species L. saxatilis, this study focus on the related species L. fabalis. This species forms ecotype with distinct difference in size and in a few genetic markers. The gene for the enzyme arginine kinase, in particular, shows a sharp frequency cline over a few meters of shore coinciding with a similar steep cline for size. An old hypothesis suggests that the strong correlation may be caused by a chromosomal inversion. This postdoc project will use bioinformatic approaches to analyse resequencing data sampled over a couple of transects with the aim to study genetic clines for SNPs and the genomic architecture of shared outliers. An L. saxatilis reference genome and a genetic map is available, and there is possibilities to also sequence a low-coverage reference genome for L. fabalis, to support the analysis.

The candidate will join a group of marine evolutionary biology researchers active at the Department of Marine Science, based at Tjrn Marine Laboratory.

The candidate is expected to lead and perform the bioinformatic analyses of the resequencing data using standard software. Present the results of the analyses in manuscript(s) and at conferences, and communicate the findings at various dissemination activities. The candidate is also expected to take part in other research-related activities at the department, and within the research group in particular.

Qualified for appointment as postdoc is a person who has been awarded a PhD degree in a subject area relevant for the position. Relevant subject areas for this position are population genetics, evolutionary biology, bioinformatics or equivalent academic disciplines. A candidate with a foreign degree that is judged to be comparable is also eligible.

The candidate should have earlier experience of bioinformatics and working with large sets of sequencing data and/or deep experience of working with statistical analyses of genetic data.

Scientific proficiency will be the primary criteria for the assessment of merits.

The scientific proficiency is assessed with a focus on the candidate’s capacity and earlier experience of working in the field of population genomics.

The assessment is based primarily on scientific publications and on participation in international conferences and workshops. The successful candidate will be chosen based on an overall assessment of proficiency and potential within the subject area, the potential and ability to independently carry out the duties of the position, and the abilities to communicate and cooperate with others.

Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 24 months

Extent: 100% Location: Department of Marine Sciences at Tjrn First day of employment: As agreed For further information about the position

It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that the application is complete in accordance with the instructions in the job advertisement, and that it is submitted before the deadline. The selection of candidates is made on the basis of the qualifications registered in the application.
