Project description

Ocean circulation in the North Atlantic plays a pivotal role in the the global climate system and is one main reason for keeping European winters relatively mild. It is characterized by a poleward flow of warm waters in the upper ocean and a compensating equatorward flow of cold deep waters. Both branches of this climatologically important circulation are present between Greenland and Scotland, and previous studies have shown that the entire North Atlantic ocean circulation is indeed sensitive to abrupt changes in the strength of these flows in this region. It is therefore of great interest to better understand the drivers that may cause these changes. The successful candidate will in this project focus on diagnosing the strength of this ocean circulation loop in key regions between Greenland and Scotland and link these to the larger North Atlantic ocean circulation. To reach these goals, the successful candidate will have to combine data from several sources; satellite-sensed fields, available in-situ and current meter data, ocean/atmospheric reanalyses as well as high-resolution ocean general circulation models.

Qualification requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of meteorology stipulates that at least 90 points must be in one of the subjects Meteorology, Oceanography, Physics or Chemistry, at least 15 credits must be in Mathematics, and an independent project work corresponding to at least 15 credits must have been completed. The requirements can also be met by acquiring the corresponding knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: the candidates' documented knowledge in a relevant field of research, written and oral proficiency in both Swedish and English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence.
