PhD Scholarship in End-of-life-tires Rubber Recycling and Powder Injection Moulding

A new PhD position in mechanical engineering is available at Technical University of Denmark. The funding allows successful candidate to work for 3 years. Applicants should apply before November 15, 2018.

The present research project will be carried out at DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Section of Manufacturing Engineering (MPP). MPP performs research and teaching in the field of manufacturing engineering. The research involves theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The main activity areas cover manufacturing processes, micro/nano manufacturing, metrology on all scales (macro, meso, micro, nano) as well as modelling approaches to all these subjects. Research and teaching is based on a multi-disciplinary use of process technology, materials science, thermodynamics as well as solid and fluid mechanics in the analysis and modelling of manufacturing processes.

The research focus at ground tyre rubber recycling. End of Life Tires (ELT) constitute a major portion of End of Life Vehicles (ELV). Since 1999, EU has banned landfilling disposal of ELT. It is an impelling necessity to find different and sustainable ways to treat the tyre waste. The second focus of this project is injection moulding with zero injection pressure.

Responsibilities and tasks

The project will require the development of necessary manufacturing knowhow enabling rubber recycling and low-pressure metal/ceramic powder injection moulding.

The research will encompass an integration of expertise in a number of different key fields such as process technology and polymer material science, process control and monitoring, statistical quality control methods, dimensional and material characterization techniques.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) in Materials and Manufacturing Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
