PhD Scholarship in Development of Numerical Tools for Noise Control in Wind Farms

A new PhD position in fluid mechanics is available at Technical University of Denmark. The funds for this position are available for 3 years. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before November 23, 2018.

DTU Wind Energy is seeking a PhD student for a scholarship on "Development of numerical tools for noise control in wind farms". The general scope of the PhD project is to develop wind turbine operational strategies to maximize energy yields and monitor the impact at receivers of noise from wind farms under various atmospheric conditions.


Aerodynamic noise from wind turbines is becoming a major barrier to public acceptance of wind turbines and wind farms. To ensure a continuous development of wind power, it is therefore required to develop advanced techniques for modelling and controlling noise from wind turbines and wind farms.

Regulations on wind turbine noise have become stricter over time in Denmark and in other countries. Additionally special restrictions for low frequency noise have been added to the Danish legislation on wind turbine noise.

The PhD study will be carried out in the Fluid Mechanics Section at the DTU Lyngby Campus. The work will be carried out in connection to the Innovation Fund Denmark (IFD) funded project entitled "Development of low-noise and cost-effective wind farm control technology". The daily work of the PhD student will be conducted as part of a research team with focus on modelling of noise from wind farms and developing an advanced optimization tool for noise control in wind farm. Good team work skills are therefore expected.

Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.
