PhD Scholarship in Chemical Physics at Lund University

Lund University is delighted to offer a PhD position in environmental sciences. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for four years in Sweden. The deadline to apply is December 31, 2018.

The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into nine departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1500 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

A PhD-position is available for photophysical and photochemical investigations of molecular-based systems for solar energy conversion, with particular focus on Earth-abundant materials such as photo-functional iron-based complexes. Investigations of photophysical and photochemical properties of new molecular systems will be conducted using a combination of experimental spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. Key aspects for the project include photophysical investigations of excited state dynamics, and photochemical investigations of e.g. photoinduced charge transfer processes of new molecular systems. Experimental observations will be combined with quantum chemical calculations to provide a comprehensive understanding of the photophysics and photochemistry of molecular systems with new and unconventional photophysical and photochemical properties currently under development as a key part of the research project. The work will be conducted in a close collaboration between the divisions of Chemical Physics and Theoretical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry at Lund University. The work will be carried out as a part of a dedicated collaborative effort to develop and characterize novel molecular systems for solar energy conversion and related photochemical applications involving a network of research groups in synthesis, spectroscopy, and theory.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD-student with a very strong background in chemistry, physics, material science or equivalent. A thorough understanding of molecular spectroscopy and molecular quantum mechanics is required for the position, and the position particularly requires excellent aptitude for a combination of experimental and theoretical research in molecular photophysics and photochemistry. A successful candidate must have excellent experimental and analytical skills required to carry out combined advanced spectroscopic and computational research. Good collaborative skills are very important to function well in the cross-disciplinary research environment involving both theoretical and experimental collaborators. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required. The applicants should provide their CV, publication list (if appropriate), description of any research experience, motivation letter that justifies why they want to start PhD education atLund University and how this particular research project matches their own interests and scientific background, and ideally one or two academic recommendation letters with the detailed contact information to the persons providing the references.

Eligibility

- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or

- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.

Type of employment

Limit of tenure, four years according to HF 5 kap 7.
