PhD Project in Photonics Technologies for Treatment and Diagnostics of Alzheimers and Dementia

A PhD scholarship in photonics is available at Technical University of Denmark. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for 3 years in Denmark. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before November 20, 2018.

DTU Fotonik works with all areas of photonic engineering and the Department is now seeking to employ a PhD student to do research within new light sources for treatment & diagnostics of Alzheimers and dementia.

Description of the PhD project

Alzheimers and dementia are brain pathologies affecting language, memory, vision, motion, and mood. The increasing number of people living with dementia is already creating immense challenges for the global health and social systems. Alzheimer's cannot be cured, but its progression can be slowed down and cognition partly restored. This PhD project will focus on the development of novel LED light source technology for early treatment of Alzheimer’s and dementia diseases. A PhD student will test and validate the LED system. As part of the development of LED system, spatiotemporal, and dopaminergic retinal responses to flickering masked stimuli will be investigated in order to fully understand the underlying mechanisms for both visual and non-visual

photoreceptors, for optimal light delivery to the retina. The work includes design of LED architecture, principles for light flickering, color mixing for optimization of visual performance and color rendering, beam shaping and holographic diffusors for uniform high-quality light distribution. The research aims are to reestablish the neuron oscillatory activity for people with Alzheimer's and to reduce beta amyloid plaque production using LED technology. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) and PET imaging will be carried out in collaboration with medical doctors.

Responsibilities and tasks

Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) in engineering/Physics or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc degree in engineering/Physics.The candidate should possess most of the following:The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
