PhD Position in Statistical Seismology at ETH Zurich

The observation, causes and impacts of earthquakes are the core focus of the research activities of the Professorship for Seismology and the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at ETH Zurich. We invite applications for a Our ETH research proposal focuses on three principal aspects of fundamental science and engineering essential for the transition from the current static to a new dynamic risk assessment framework:

Next generation earthquake forecasting tools, to be developed within this project, highlight periods and regions of elevated seismic hazard and risk due to natural and induced earthquakes with steadily improving accuracy. The data-driven, adaptive forecasting tools we are proposing to develop and test probabilistically would combine state of the art statistical and physics-based earthquake forecasting approaches.

Data-driven structural health monitoring and damage detection for smart infrastructure and buildings are within reach, based on coupling novel simulation tools with state-of-the-art monitoring methodologies.

Integrated dynamic loss assessment for infrastructure systems and buildings enabled by coupling the hazard forecasting and data-driven rapid damage detection.

The successful candidate would work under the supervision of Prof. Stefan Wiemer (Head Swiss Seismological Service, D-ERDW) and would closely collaborate with Prof. Bozidar Stojadinovic (D-BAUG) and Prof. Eleni Chatzi (D-BAUG).

We are looking for young and highly motivated candidates with strong quantitative skills and the ability to take an interdisciplinary perspective. The candidate should fulfil the following minimal requirements: (1) Serious background in geophysics or related field, knowledge of seismology and statistics a plus. (2) Demonstrably high programming skills preferably in MATLAB or Python. (3) Sufficient fluency in English. (4) A master's degree (or equivalent) in Geophysics, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Sciences or related areas.
