PhD Position in Probability and Mathematical Statistics

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD scholarship in mathematics at University of Amsterdam. The initial contract for this position is 4 years. Candidates are welcome before January 05, 2019.

The Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI) at the Faculty of Science invites you to apply for a PhD position on the project entitled Road Traffic Management under uncertainty.

This project concerns solving optimisation problems on traffic networks under uncertainty. The uncertainty comes from the fact that the current state of the network in terms of congestion is unknown (and perhaps changing), and so data has to be collected in real time by the units whose trajectories are to be optimised. Exploring the network requires sending units along potentially suboptimal routes but does reduce uncertainty. There are therefore two competing tasks to balance in this problem: reducing uncertainty about traffic in the network and optimising the routes of particles in the network.

Bayesian methods provide a framework that allows any collected data to be easily incorporated into the inference, and comes with build in uncertainty quantification. This provides a rather complete description of the network which are used to describe instances of the underlying optimisation problem that is to be solved.

The project is part of the Gravitation Programme NETWORKS. You are expected to work in collaboration with the members of NETWORKS and to attend the NETWORKS activities. You will also be involved in teaching in our Bachelor’s and/or Master’s programmes in Mathematics. An appropriate travel budget will be provided to attend conferences and present relevant publications.

Experience in teaching is a plus.

The starting date of the appointment is flexible but should be no later than 1 September 2019.

The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it can be extended for a total duration of 4 years. The appointment should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis).

Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from 2,266 (first year) up to a maximum of 2,897 (last year). The annual salary will be increased by 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
