PhD External Fire Spread Risk for Tall Building Design

The School of Civil Engineering at The University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia) is offering a PhD scholarship for a motivated student to contribute to research being undertaken within the . Candidates with a background in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Physics are strongly encouraged to apply. The scholarship will be for three (3) years and valued at AU$ $27,596 per year, with the possibility of up to 2 potential extensions in 6 month blocks. Top-up scholarships and international student fee-waivers are also available to exceptional candidates.

Recent fire events in buildings containing cladding materials, such as aluminium composite panels (ACPs) and insulation materials, have raised concerns regarding the risk that faade systems in existing buildings may pose to the safety of building occupants and emergency services. The life safety risk posed by faade systems is represented by the potential external fire spread breaching compartmentation and the vulnerability of the building fire safety strategy to this event.

The performance of the system and its components must be understood explicitly in order to perform an adequate fire risk assessment of faade systems. One of the key requirements to define performance is related to the quantification of the external vertical and horizontal fire spread rate in the faade, to the extent and precision possible. However, due to the high complexity of faade systems and extended source of available components to the design, assessing the performance of faade systems is far from trivial. Recent research efforts have focused on characterising the individual components so that the performance of intermediate- and full-scale systems can be interrelated to fundamental behaviour.

This research aims at building a conservative, yet robust framework to assess the external fire spread hazard of faade systems used in tall building design. The methodology consists of developing an intermediate-scale testing method that can be used to build up fundamental flammability properties from system components and other crucial faade features. Experimental work within the scope of this project will be carried in the state of the art at The University of Queensland and in the Queensland Emergency Services Training Academy (Whyte Island, Brisbane).

Candidates must hold a relevant undergraduate or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics or other related field. Candidates with skills or interested in fire safety engineering, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and/or forestry are strongly encouraged to apply. The current RTP Stipend rate is AUD $27,596 per annum (2019 rate, indexed annually) tax-free for three years with the possibility of two 6-month extensions in approved circumstances.

Students from Australian and New Zealand are not required to pay tuition fees.
