Clinical Postdoc Position at University of Cambridge

University of Cambridge, UK has an opening postdoctoral scholar position in neurology. This position is available for 3 years in the first instance. This position is closed on January 27, 2019.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a medical practitioner with an interest in neuroscience to join Professor Roger Barker and his team as a Clinical Research Associate in the Huntington’s disease (HD) clinic at the University of Cambridge. The post-holder will primarily work on the ground breaking IONIS-HTTRx study, and the associated natural history extension study and Pivotal Phase III trial (Roche Pharmaceuticals). This trial is investigating the use of a novel anti-sense oligonucleotide therapy against huntington, which potentially represents the first disease-modifying treatment for HD.

The successful applicant will take on a key position in Professor Barker’s team and as such will gain extensive clinical research experience of Huntington’s disease and cognitive neuroscience, as well as experience in early phase clinical trials- especially as we see this trial as the first of several, including ones coming from our own labs.

The post-holder will have the opportunity to participate in the multidisciplinary HD clinic at the John van Geest Centre for Brain Repair. The HD clinic is one of the largest in the UK, and prides itself on providing a well-respected, patient-orientated clinical service for the East Anglia region but also accepts referrals from further afield. They will have the opportunity to work with a broad range of patients at all stages of the disease from pre-manifest HD gene carriers through to patients at the latest stages of the disease. The HD clinic is embedded within the renowned and well-respected Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge and has close links with the clinical neurology service at Addenbrooke’s Hospital both of which run an active program of seminars and departmental meetings, including weekly discussions of educational cases.

Professor Barker’s lab also works closely with other institutes on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus including the ARUK Drug Discovery Institute and the Wellcome Trust – MRC Stem Cell Institute. Consequently, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to witness first hand, and if so desired, participate in the cutting-edge development of novel therapeutics as well as the innovative clinical research that is undertaken within the Barker group.

The post offers excellent research and clinical neurology experience under the expert supervision of Professor Roger Barker and his team, with the opportunity to develop an interest and expertise in academic neurology and will provide a platform for future applications to neurology specialty training. Suitable applicants will be supported in conducting their own clinical research and if appropriate in undertaking studies to contribute towards a higher degree (MPhil or PhD).

We will only consider applicants who have completed their general medical training to the end of Foundation Year 2 or equivalent level. An interest in neurodegenerative disease is essential and experience of working in neurology or genetics at ST3 or above would be considered advantageous, as would previous experience of lumbar puncture.

Importantly, applicants will be expected to demonstrate a compassionate and thoughtful manner that is reflected in their approach to both patients and their families, to work flexibly within a multidisciplinary team and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.

This appointment requires an Honorary Clinical Contract and GMC License to Practice before commencement in post.

Please ensure that you upload a covering letter, CV, and the additional information for clinical researchers form in the Upload section of the online application. Please include details of your referees, including e-mail address and phone number, one of which must be your most recent line manager.
